Reversing a Negative Spiral

Whenever I am disturbed about anything, then it’s time for me to figure out what is going on. I cannot afford to be chronically upset. I don’t think it’s good for anyone but perhaps I’m more diligent than most because of my history of depression. If I’m not careful, then a minor upset can spiral into a relapse and I don’t want that.

Thankfully, the Law of Attraction provides a way out. You see, feeling upset means your emotions are in a downward spiral. The more you focus on what’s upsetting you, the worse you feel.

The way out is to reverse the spiral.

Now, it’s nearly impossible to go from very upset to very happy in a moment (unless drugs are involved and who needs that?) What is required to reverse the downward spiral of your emotions is to find a thought that brings you relief from how you are feeling.

Relief is what you feel when you are letting go of resistance. “Resistance to what?” you might ask. Resistance to the wellbeing that is naturally yours and resistance to the pure, positive energy that is your Source.

In order to get to a point of relief, it is important to use self-talk to get there. I recommend this technique: set a timer for three minutes.

Close your eyes and say to yourself the same soothing words you would to a loved one who is upset.

I learned this technique many years ago and I clearly remember the first time I used it with great success. I was faced with a looming deadline at work. If I missed it, my client’s ads would not get into the Sunday newspaper and we would lose a week. The more upset and stressed out I became, the more my work suffered. I kept getting more behind. I realized that, unless I reversed the negative spiral I was in, I was not going to make it. So I sat in my desk chair and set the timer on my computer to three minutes. I closed my eyes and started a conversation in my head that went something like this:

  • You are not curing cancer. This is important but if you don’t get it done, no one (including you) is going to die.
  • You know how to do this and you’re good at it.
  • You’ve always thrived under pressure. This time is no different.
  • You’ve always gotten it done before. You’ll get it done this time.

The timer went off and I felt a great deal of relief.  My whole body was much more relaxed, I was smiling and I got the work done. That is the power of the Law of Attraction that says, “You get more of what you focus on.”

Maybe that’s why my motto is: Change Your Focus; Change Your Life!
