Forget Your Troubles, C’Mon Get Happy!

Forget Your Troubles, C’mon Get Happy!

I’m not alone, I know, in that song lyrics stick in my head and repeat themselves, over and over, and over again. This week I keep recalling the lyrics from the song I have used as the title for this column.

What’s wonderful is that, whenever the song pops into my head, I instantly get into a better mood!

It turns out that the theme of this week’s column is to use music to get yourself into a good mood. The better mood you are in, the more productive you will be. The more productive you are, the less stressed. Doo-dah! Doo-dah! Camptown ladies sing this song, all the doo-dah day!

There are so many great songs to lift our moods. Here are just a few too chose from:
Whistle While You Work
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Don’t Rain on my Parade
That’s Entertainment!
Be Our Guest (from Beauty and the Beast)
Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head
Beyond the Sea (Bobby Darin)
Dancing in the Streets (Martha & the Vandellas)
New York, New York!
Chicago!
Favorite Things
Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here
Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands
Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!
Oh What a Beautiful Morning
Old MacDonald Had a Farm
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
Take me Out to the Ballgame
When Irish Eyes are Smiling
When You Wish Upon a Star
You are My Sunshine
You’re a Grand Old Flag

These are just a few of the many choices to hum or sing during the day. This time of year, there are also some great holiday songs from which to choose.

The point is to use music to get happy and stay there. That means, if “White Christmas” makes you cry, avoid it! Go for “Frosty the Snowman” instead. I’ve mentioned in the past that your brain doesn’t know the difference between actually being in a good mood or faking one. If you are singing a happy song, your brain will receive the message that you ARE happy and send chemicals to your bloodstream to back it up!

The Law of Attraction says, “You attract more of what you focus on.” When you are singing or humming happy music, you are focused on being happy. The Universe will, as a result, send you more to be happy about!

Of course, people will get suspicious. Many will think you’ve been into the spiked eggnog! Let them wonder. What’s important is your state of mind. It takes so little to put yourself into a good mood if you’re simply willing to go against the tide.
The tide, of course, is people complaining. This time of year, many are complaining about all the things they “have” to do. And yet, when I’m in the mall, I don’t see anyone with a gun to their head being forced to buy gifts! I don’t see anyone clutching ransom notes that say, “If you don’t put on the perfect Holiday dinner, you’ll never see your mother again!” And I certainly haven’t heard on the news about any law being passed that says we must be stressed to the max!

Any time of year can be stressful, if we let it.

Any situation can make us nuts, if we choose.

Go against the tide. Sing the song, over and over, “Don’t worry, be happy!” If you sing it with conviction, who knows? You just might get others to sing along.

Who needs eggnog?
